It’s much more effective and easier for you to prevent behavior problems than it is to correct them. We know that the major reason pets are given up to animal shelters is because of behavior problems. We encourage you to follow through and purchase the behavior education products we recommend. We want your dog - and your cat too - to be behaviorally healthy!
More About Daphne
I transitioned from the horse industry Dressage while I owned two Doberman Pinschers and competed extensively with them in AKC Obedience. At that time I was taught and only knew training methods involving force, coercion, pain, intimidation, compulsion, etc. I followed my trainers instructions to 'discipline' both the horses and my dogs with harsh methods. The more the animal "disobeyed" you matched it equally if not more so with corrective force. There was some praise and rewards here and there but the emphasis was not allowing the animal to "get away with bad behavior". I now understand more about getting desired behavior and how to train with limited aversives. NO need to leash pop, leash corrections, zap or anything else.
My Dobermans have since pasted and I currently have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They are purely clicker trained and they have never experienced compulsion, coercion, intimidation, fear, force or pain.
My belief is that it takes a greater skilled trainer to use motivational approaches then those trainers that use traditional compulsive methods or those that classify themselves as 'balanced trainers' (corrections and praise). Bob Bailey, Kay Laurence, Ken Ramirez, Kathy Sdao, and Steve White have all been great influences in my philosophy of think, plan, do- know your learning theory and respect your learner.
I've has been involved with the Morgan Hill Dog Owners groups for a few years and has been acting as Vice-Chair for the group going on her second term. She volunteers her time and expertise to Guarding Angels for Solider Pets.
